Children Escort
The escorting of sick children
On 25th of October, Aviation Sans Frontières has celebrated his 15 000 child escort.
The mission: ASF provides for many NGOs escorts by air especially for sick children, suffering from serious illnesses so they can benefit from surgery in Europe not available in their own country.
These children come mainly from West Africa, the Maghreb, the Middle East, Madagascar and Laos. They are escorted by ASF’ volunteers who are either active or retired airlines employees benefiting from staff discounted tickets as part of their concession.
Owing to the critical illness of the children, escorts are sometimes achieved in difficult conditions, and therefore require from our dedicated and experienced volunteers a strong personal investment as well as being vigilant at all times.
2011 Overview:
As always, the mission deals with difficult cases while facing difficult circumstances (strikes, full flights, weather...). Nevertheless, 1150 children have been escorted in 2011 by over 400 volunteers. A child escort currently cost an average of 160 Euros, despite efforts to reduce it further.
